Price your own clip length

A 5-second 1080p clip costs $1.20 at Luma and $0.50 to $3.40 at Runway. A 10-second 1080p clip costs $3.60 at Luma and $1.00 to $6.80 at Runway.

Luma sells fixed 5-second and 10-second clips, so both lengths are published. Runway bills per second, so both lengths are a multiplication. That makes both lengths comparable without a duration assumption. Ray Reframe is excluded from these tables because it is a different operation, not a text-to-video clip.

Basis: 5 seconds and 10 seconds at 1080p. Luma's figures are published per clip; Runway's are per-second rates multiplied by the clip length.

Luma's two 5-second 1080p rows — Ray T2V at $1.20 and Ray V2V at $2.16 — sit in the middle of Runway's range. 5 Runway rows are cheaper than Luma's T2V clip; 9 are cheaper than its V2V clip.

10 seconds at 1080p

Vendor Model Rate Billing Cost for 10s
Runway gemini_omni_flash_1.2 (1080p) $0.10/s per second $1.00

Runway wan3_prime (1080p) $0.28/s per second $2.80
Runway grok_imagine_1_5 (1080p) $0.29/s per second $2.90

Luma Luma Ray T2V/I2V (10s) $3.60/clip per clip (10s) $3.60
Runway seedance2 (1080p) $0.40/s per second $4.00
Luma Luma Ray V2V (10s) $4.32/clip per clip (10s) $4.32
Runway seedance2_5 (1080p) $0.68/s per second $6.80

At 10 seconds Luma's T2V clip is $3.60 and its V2V clip $4.32. 8 Runway rows are cheaper than the T2V clip at this length.

Luma's per-second cost rises with length, Runway's does not

Vendor 5s cost 10s cost 5s per second 10s per second
Luma Ray T2V (1080p) $1.20 $3.60 $0.24 $0.36
Luma Ray V2V (1080p) $2.16 $4.32 $0.432 $0.432
Runway 1080p rows $0.50–$3.40 $1.00–$6.80 unchanged unchanged

Luma's T2V price triples when the clip doubles, so the 10-second clip costs 50% more per second. Its V2V row does not: $2.16 for 5 seconds and $4.32 for 10 seconds is the same $0.432 per second at both lengths. Runway's per-second rate is constant by definition, so doubling the length doubles the price.

Where this comparison breaks

Clip length. Luma sells 5 and 10 seconds only. Runway sells any length, subject to minimums on six models. A 7-second comparison is not available at Luma.

Resolution. Luma's 1080p step is steep: its 5-second T2V clip is $0.15 at 540p, $0.30 at 720p and $1.20 at 1080p — the top step is 4× the middle one. Runway's 1080p rows have no 540p equivalent, so the tiers do not line up.

Model type. Luma's V2V rows take source video and cost more; Runway's gemini_omni_flash (video to video) is a separate row at $0.11/s. Compare like with like: T2V against T2V-generating rows, V2V against video to video.

Minimums. Runway's aleph2 bills a 56-credit minimum, which at 28 credits/second means a 5-second clip is billed normally but a 1-second clip is not.

Which to pick, on price alone

  • Cheapest 5-second 1080p clip: Runway gemini_omni_flash_1.2, $0.50.
  • Cheapest 10-second 1080p clip: Runway gemini_omni_flash_1.2, $1.00.
  • Cheapest Luma 1080p clip: Ray T2V at 5 seconds, $1.20.
  • Fixed-length simplicity: Luma. One clip, one line on the invoice, no minimum to check.
  • Long clips: Runway, because Luma stops at 10 seconds.

FAQ

Is Luma cheaper than Runway?

Not at 1080p. Luma's cheapest 1080p clip is $1.20 for 5 seconds; Runway has five 1080p rows under that price for the same 5 seconds. Luma is cheaper than Runway's expensive rows (seedance2_5 at $3.40 for 5 seconds), so the answer depends on the model.

Why is Luma's 10-second clip three times the 5-second price?

That is Luma's published rate: $1.20 for 5 seconds, $3.60 for 10 seconds at 1080p. It works out to $0.24/s versus $0.36/s.

Does Runway charge the same per second at any length?

Yes, subject to the credit minimums on six models. A 5-second clip at $0.10/s is $0.50; a 10-second clip at the same rate is $1.00.

What about Luma's Reframe row?

Ray Reframe is priced per second: $0.06 at 540p, $0.12 at 720p, $0.36 at 1080p. It is a different operation from text-to-video, so it is not in the tables above.
